Religion of Bulgar period | The Moslem Clergy had a great influence in the Kazan Khanate. Its head, seid could be chosen only from the descendants of Prophet Muhammad. Seid was the second after the khan important person of the state. While the khan was away, seid was to fulfill his functions.
There was found a row of cemeteries of this period, for instance, the cemetery found not far from the State united Museum of the Republic Tatarstan and one more in the Kremlin, near the building of the Department of Agriculture and Provisions of the Republic Tatarstan. Both these cemeteries are Moslem. The famous grave stones of the end of the XIII century (1297) also were found at some town cemetery.
Islam preachers – wandering sheikhs, would travel from settlement to settlement to spread culture and teach people Arabic. |
