M. DZHALIL TATAR ACADEMIC OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE
The building of the M.Dzhalil theatre is an architectural monument protected by the government. The theatre was opened in 1939 and since then it is the center of musical culture of the Republic. In 1956 it was named after the outstanding Tatar poet Musa Dzhalil. In 1988 the theatre was given the rank of an academic one. The building of the theatre attracts attention thanks to its irreproachable harmony of the classical forms (architects N.Skvortsov and I.Gainutdinov) supplemented with elements of Tatar national ornamental patterns. The pediments are crowned with figures of muses; in the niches of the side elevations are located monuments to ingenious poets Alexander Pushkin and Gabdulla Tukay.
The repertoire of the theatre mainly consists of masterpieces of the world music and eminent works of Tatar classics, such as: "Boris Godunov", "The Queen of Spades", "Prince Igor", "Traviata", "Swan Lake", "Sleeping Beauty", "Don Quixote", "Altinchech", "Shurale". The main events of each season are international festivals – Fedor Shalyapin Opera Festival and Rudolf Nuriev Classic Ballet Festival. The best performers of Russia, Commonwealth of Independent States and Europe come to take part in these festivals. Yearly tours over Europe bring the opera company of the theatre invariable success.
